This September, Paul Chambers, our Training & Development Manager at Pipp & Co, celebrated an incredible milestone: 50 years as an artisan baker. From his early apprenticeship in Swindon to shaping the next generation of bakers at our bakery in Wiltshire, Paul’s journey is a masterclass in dedication, skill, and passion for the craft.
From Swindon Apprenticeship to Master Baker
Paul’s baking career began at just 16 in a small Swindon bakery. Over the years, he honed his skills, completing his City & Guilds qualification, and worked across artisan and larger commercial bakeries, always prioritising quality, technique, and training.
His journey shows that a career in baking is more than a job—it’s a lifelong craft.
Training the Next Generation of Bakers
As Training & Development Manager, Paul focuses on bakery training and mentoring. He believes understanding the why behind every technique is just as important as knowing the how.
From taste panels to hands-on guidance, Paul ensures our bakers are confident and skilled, carrying forward the artisan techniques that make Pipp & Co products so special.
A Day in the Life of an Artisan Baker
Even after 50 years, Paul’s passion for baking is unwavering. He starts his day at 4am, arriving at the bakery in Wiltshire by 5am, overseeing production, and ensuring our artisan products — the same ones that make it to our Bristol café — meet the highest standards.
Colleagues affectionately call him “The Feeder” for his habit of sharing samples, advice, and encouragement.
Featured in British Baker
Paul’s incredible career and philosophy on baking were recently recognised in a British Baker interview, where he discussed the importance of small, hands-on bakeries, the evolution of training, and his love for the craft.
